Traversing Spooler over underdeck carousel hatch
Cable Handling

Traversing Spoolers

Deck-mounted traversing spooler systems for underdeck carousels — rack-and-pinion traverse, integrated guide chute, VFD electric drive synchronised with the carousel PLC.

Overview

Traversing Spoolers

Deck-mounted traversing spooler systems engineered to feed cable into underdeck carousels — controlled, repeatable lay-pattern across the basket with full PLC integration to the carousel drive.

Each spooler comprises a deck foundation, a rack-and-pinion traverse carriage, and a product guide chute for controlled cable laying into the carousel basket. The spooler control is integrated with the carousel PLC so traverse position, carousel rotation and product feed remain synchronised in real time. The chute can absorb slack during emergencies or when operations stop, protecting the cable and the lay pattern.

  • Rack-and-pinion traverse over the hatch opening — repeatable position control across the full spooler stroke.
  • Integrated product guide chute with rollers (LUC) — protects the cable through the bend and absorbs slack on emergency stop.
  • PLC-integrated VFD electric drive — traverse motion follows carousel rotation automatically, no operator hand-off.

Key Features

  • Rack-and-pinion traverse mechanism over the hatch opening — 5,700 mm spooler stroke across an 8,500 mm hatch reference
  • Product guide chute with LUC rollers — controlled bend, slack absorption and protection of the cable on emergency stop
  • Electric VFD drive integrated with the carousel PLC — traverse, carousel rotation and product feed remain synchronised
  • 5 m MBR / 7.5 MT line tension rating — suitable for HV submarine cable and umbilical product
  • Rails bolted to deck — modular foundation; carriage demountable for survey and class inspection
  • Traversing gearmotor with E-chain energy-management for power and control routing
  • Local diagnostic interface plus remote operation from the cable-lay control room
  • Engineered for harsh-environment transit and 24/7 offshore duty
  • Coatings: foundation RAL 6005 Moss Green; carriage RAL 5017 Blue / RAL 3020 Red

Underdeck Carousel Package — 2 × Traversing Spoolers

Two traversing spoolers, one per underdeck carousel — design, supply and integration with carousel PLC

ApplicationUnderdeck cable carousels — top-loading product feed
Quantity2 × spooler systems (one per carousel)
CountrySingapore (engineered & fabricated)
ClassProject-specific
ReferenceAnnexure-E (E-001 to E-043)

Engineering, fabrication, FAT and integration of two traversing spooler systems for an underdeck carousel package. Each spooler is mounted on a bolted-to-deck rail foundation with a rack-and-pinion carriage that traverses 5,700 mm across the hatch opening. The integrated guide chute (with LUC rollers) carries the product through the controlled bend into the carousel basket; chute geometry is sized to absorb slack during emergencies or stoppages. The traversing gearmotor is driven by a VFD electrically integrated with the carousel PLC — traverse position is commanded directly from carousel rotation, eliminating operator hand-off and ensuring a repeatable lay pattern.

Delivery Methodology

Spooler Build Process

Six integration gates from layout planning through class approval — the standard workflow applied to every cable handling package Dimension delivers.

  1. 01
    Layout Planning

Spooler footprint, traverse stroke and chute envelope set against the vessel hatch and carousel basket geometry.

  2. 02
    Integrated Analysis

Cable-path analysis across the chute, traverse and carousel — MBR, tension and slack-absorption envelope verified.

  3. 03
    PLC Integration

Spooler VFD drive and traverse position synchronised with carousel rotation through the shared PLC.

  4. 04
    Equipment FAT

Factory Acceptance Testing — traverse function, chute alignment and emergency-stop slack absorption.

  5. 05
    Carousel Integration

Spooler installed over hatch, foundation rails bolted to deck, integrated FAT with the carousel package.

  6. 06
    Class Approvals

Foundation and structure approval; integrated cable-handling certification with the carousel package.

Outcome Each spooler arrives at the shipyard load-tested, PLC-integrated with the carousel and supported by Dimension commissioning crew.
